The Birth and Reunion of the Mechanic Apprentices Library

In 1818 William Wood started a library for apprentices in Worcester. by 1820 it joined the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association and later became the Mechanic Apprentices Library. After decades of influence the group dissolved as apprenticeship systems changed. A reunion at Young’s hotel drew about 50 former members and leaders including ex Mayor F. W. Lincoln and George H. Monroe as they recalled early days and affirmed future gatherings.

Oxford county tax tale ends in wedding lesson

In Oxford county a tale of a mechanic who declared he paid tax on 10000 at interest amused locals. His honesty led to exposure, a wealthy widow’s interest, and a wedding. The selectmen then abated the assessed tax while the mechanic’s zeal faded as fame waned. Moral: apparent wealth should not mislead tax officials.
