The Leyland liner Bostonian arrived early yesterday, five days overdue from Liverpool, after battling giant waves and terrific head gales that swept from stem to stern. A wall of water broke over the bow as Captain Parry cleared the channel, nearly swamping the ship while forward weight pulled the bow down.
Charles Dimond and Atkinson Sayles, experimenters in washing powders, were badly burned when materials with the inventors blew up while cooking on a stove in Dimond’s Roxbury home yesterday afternoon. A kitchen was wrecked and the district was unsettled by visions of outrages.
Dimond of 38 Fayston Street and Sayles were planning a new washing powder when the duo sent Dimond’s wife out to avoid disturbance. Shortly after, an explosion rocked the house, shattering windows, blackening surfaces, and engulfing the room in burning alcohol.
Three men robbed a Beach street saloon late last night then fled to a roof and hid in a room across a fire escape. A courageous woman detained them until officers arrived, earning high praise from police who did not reveal her name.
The event drew large crowds as many children and adults lined the streets. Governor Draper and Governor Prouty stood together in the receiving line beside Mrs. Draper while civic and military units from across the state participated. Justice Edgar J. Sherman led the Massachusetts Loyal Legion in the early procession with Chief Justice Aiken among the first in line.
Governor Draper and Mrs. Draper greet a crowd of 4671 at the State House reception as 2000 children endure a snow storm. The youngest guest is 4 months old and the oldest 56. Secretary Moyer and Governor Prouty of Vermont join the receiving party.
In a 2006 Washington's Birthday event, over 2000 attendees braved a blizzard as Governor Draper and Mrs. Draper greeted the crowd on Beacon Hill. The youngest child was four months old, twins Thirza Elizabeth and Alice Marjorie Grant were lifted to the Governor, and General N A M Dudley appeared in brigadier general uniform. About 4671 people shook hands with the couple despite the weather.
In San Francisco Adolph Wolgast of Milwaukee defeats Battling Nelson of Hegewich Illinois for the lightweight title in the 40th round of a scheduled 45 round bout at the Point Richmond arena. Referee Eddie Smith halted the one sided contest to prevent a knockout as Nelson took severe punishment. Nelson’s mauling is described as an unprecedented beating by long time boxing observers.
Philadelphia February report notes violence as 100000 men may join a sympathetic strike. Federal troops could be detailed to quell car strike riots after a mail car attack. Postmaster informed by President Kough that street railway cannot assure mail transport though efforts will continue. Washington officials notified. action expected tomorrow.
In Philadelphia on Washington's birthday a mob attacked streetcars and police as 200 troops were repulsed with bayonets. Three boys were shot and expected to die, with several others wounded during rioting after Philadelphia Rapids Transit Co resumed service. Market Street saw sustained disturbances as cars were stoned and officers assailed. About a dozen arrests occurred, with enhanced crowd incidents including two prisoners escaping a trolley car.
