In Chicago this afternoon Dr. William R. Harper president of the University of Chicago underwent a serious surgical operation at Presbyterian Hospital as hundreds of students gathered for prayers for his recovery.
After a prolonged illness and an initial appendectomy, Dr. Harper underwent a second operation. Surgeons confirmed a cancerous condition near the head of the colon. The operation was technically successful, and the patient recovered from anesthesia. Doctors hope for a full recovery but expect continued medical and X ray treatment.
Cloudy but likely fair Thursday with warmer temperatures. Friday should be fair with winds from the west or south. Storm warnings are posted along the Atlantic coast from Hatteras to Cape Cod.

The blaze started in the L and caused about 800 dollars in damage before firefighters stopped it. All occupants escaped unharmed though not dressed. the main house remained habitable.
