Fire Laddies Ball in Mechanics Hall Nets $12 000 for Benefit Fund

Sixtieth Annual Builders Banquet at Otis Street

The Builders and Contractors Association held its sixtieth annual banquet at Otis street last night drawing eighty five members. Speakers included John Cargnagh Walter Burke James Lahey Charles Craib John Madden and Henry Hogan with music by George McKenna and Mr Mrs McConaughty and Henry French. Luther A Roby and Edward A Moseley sent letters expressing regret at absence.

Won Trophy of Merit at United States Hotel reception

About 150 attended the Battery of the First Massachusetts Heavy Artillery annual reception and banquet at the United States Hotel. Captain W. E. Lombard presided. The unit moved through several posts in 1898 and was mustered out on November 14. Ten toasts followed, with presentations of the Wesley L. Page trophy to Percy H. Prayer. The hall featured flags, portraits, and a crowded reception with dancers and promenading guests.

Mayor eyeing municipal use of steam and gasoline carriages

The city builds two experimental driving carriages a steam powered unit at Newton and a gasoline model in St Louis. If successful, the Mayor plans city ownership and broader adoption, with one carriage assigned to Superintendent Cattle and another to street department. The Stanhope pattern carriage costs about $50, running costs about 15 cents a day, and replacement of horse drawn carriages is hoped to cut expenses.
