In Needham on February 20 three young men risked their lives in the icy Charles River to rescue a hunting dog that broke through thin ice. Chester Cook, the dog's owner, was walking with the animal when it fell in near the riverbank and failed to escape.
Washington reports Weather Bureau forecasts a week of unusually cold, stormy weather across the nation. A storm will move from the Rockies to the Atlantic coast bringing heavy snow in the north and rain in other regions, followed by clear cold conditions along the Atlantic states.
Forecast for Boston and vicinity calls for rain on Monday and partly cloudy but likely fair weather on Tuesday with cold conditions. In New England, rain is expected in the south, with rain or snow in the northern portions on Monday and Tuesday, followed by partly cloudy and colder skies with moderate south and southeast winds.
Cook, a Chestnut street resident, whistled to a dog but could not lure it from hard ice. Observing the animal stuck, he removed his coat, sweater, and shoes and went onto the icy surface to attempt a rescue.
Samuel Pearlstein of 50 Barton Street West End was attacked and robbed of 46 dollars in front of his home at 11 last night. His wife was beaten while trying to help, felled to the icy pavement and found semi conscious by neighbors.
Pearlstein and his wife were attacked by two robbers on a street. He wrestled one man to extract $2 before Patrolman Fay of Station 3 arrived and seized the other. Suspect identified as Simon Goldberg, 24, of 41 Barton Street. In Philadelphia rioting followed a transit strike, with cars burned and crews driven from lines.
Reports indicate widespread stoppages as labor disputes trigger a citywide strike. Authorities urge calm while unions and employers negotiate, with public transit and logistics sectors hardest hit. No injuries reported as officers monitor demonstrations.
Labor leaders threaten to call out every union worker as riots injure three and wreck 297 cars while 2608 car windows are smashed. About 6400 street car employees are out and 3000 special police sworn in. Cars were removed from streets at 5 pm yesterday. Cause cited is antipathy of Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company to labor unions and wage demands.
Police arrested nearly sixty people for inciting to riot as two women suffered gunfire injuries. A mob at Twenty sixth and Wharton forced a conductor and motorman from a streetcar, then set it and a following car ablaze with fuel from a nearby freight car while four women passengers fled. Police and a chemical engine intervened to halt the flames.
The Finance Commission’s latest report proposes discharging more city laborers, cutting pay for aged workers, and firing 12 of the city's best known employees. It will be sent to the City Council for action at this afternoon’s meeting as it seeks to reduce the city’s expenditures.
Samuel D Warren, millionaire attorney and former polo player, known as the paper mill king, died sudden ly at his Dedham estate Karlstein shortly before midnight Saturday. His death halts a custody contest between brothers over a $4.5 million estate. A friend said Warren had traveled from Marlboro Street to Dedham seeking rest amid the family suit. The case, involving Edward P Warren of Gorham Me to remove Samuel as trustee, was before Judge Harmon and referred to master Frederick Cunningham with several hearings held.
Samuel Warren Sr., senior partner of the S. D. Warren & Co. paper firm, died suddenly at his Dedham estate. Dr Hodgdon cited apoplexy as the cause after Warren grew gravely ill following a day of rest at his home. Mrs Warren and several children were present. His offices were at 143 Devonshire Street.
