The Story of Music by W J Henderson review

A concise, balanced history of modern European music from 533 to 1887. It avoids heavy biographical detail, tracing general progress in musical creativity andinstrumental forms through Palestrina to Verdi Wagner. The author argues for a middle course in Wagnerian versus Italian schools and targets fair minded readers.

A 1885 Barnstaple bicentenary corrected the long-standing birth-year error in Gay’s biographies, clarifying his true birth in 1685 and dispelling prior misstatements.
