The board considered charges that Henry Genaud proprietor of Maxim's Hotel on Harr ison avenue is unfit to hold a city license after 16 former waiters testified to claims exceeding 5000 dollars loaned to him and unpaid. Decision was withheld.
All American consuls announce the United States considers merchant ships have the right to arm defenders to repel attacks. The government will press Germany to abandon its new stance and honor promises of immunity for unresisting merchant ships.
Greek and French waiters testified they were forced to work for tips after buying cafe stations. Loans to Genaud ranged from 150 to 400 dollars with six Greek workers owing 600 each. Some were told to return for their jobs if they paid a new fee, while tables were sold and stations swapped.
The Rev. Thomas Richards of Fox has accepted the pastorate of Bethany Congregational Church in Quincy and will preach his first sermon there on Feb. 27. He succeeds the Rev. Benjamin Willmott, now of Roxbury.
The Newark marriage yesterday was annulled by Vice-Chancellor Foster after proving Buffum was insane at the ceremony and the bride did not know. Buffum remains confined at Morris Plains Insane Asylum. physicians say his condition is permanent.
Miss Alice Nightingale 25 faces annulment action after marrying Julius H. Preston Jr. at 17. Preston sails to France for hospital relief work while his father cites lack of legal age under New York law. Nightingale previously wed Hubbard and Roger Case.
Taunton Feb 18 Frank H. Swift of New Bedford found guilty in Superior Court of bribery tied to the New Bedford city election last December. Prosecutors said Swift offered two men each seven dollars for their votes. He presented no defense. Charles W. Sullivan and Alfred Bird face trial on similar charges. Swift to be sentenced next week.
John T Koelousky of Watertown, 16, was arrested yesterday afternoon for attempting to rob the till at Herbert W Hubbard’s fish market on Mt Auburn Street. Police found the tale he told to explain the incident to be among the most pathetic cases in months.
About five o clock Koelousky a 106 Berkshire Street Cambridge youth tried to grab cash from Hubbard at a fish market. He fled through a rear window pursued by peers but was captured by police. He confessed parental sickness and hunger drove the theft and was kept overnight.
Dispatches report large demonstrations in Constantinople against the war and the Young Turks. German police clashed with protesters as the garrison guards the palace and ministers. Reports say Turkish troops balked at marching to Armenia. Unrest also reaches Smyrna and Beirut.
More than a dozen Boston boys missing from home are in a British brigade in France. Three young men from Boston have been killed in action in that brigade, according to William J. Cox of Dorchester who returned after four years of service under the British flag.
Cox, wounded twice in Arras France, returns home after release aided by Mayor Curley and Congressman Gallivan. He recalls shellfire and mud, a horse shot, and a heavy shell fragment burn. Three Boston youths Frank OConnell Frank Bradley and James Harrington died in action with the First West Lancashire Field Artillery.
Springfield training school fencers defeated Harvard in Hemenway Gym last evening by five to four. Seabury captain Winn and R P Rowley were the visitors winners. For Harvard Captain Russell and E B Hamilton scored.
Colonel Roosevelt reportedly told Governor McCall he would support him if he wins the Republican nomination for president at Chicago next June. The message, sent before Roosevelt sailed for Cuba, was said to have reached Root Burton and Knox, with General Leonard Wood delivering it to McCall and Robert T. Lincoln relaying assurances to the others.
Washington reports President Wilson declares the United States will not permit an armed ships sinkings without warning. The State Department dispatches insist ships may carry defensive armament. Berlin is expected to react to this stance as Germany pushes submarine warfare.
