A Port Arthur despatch reports hundreds of Japanese soldiers were mowed down by a masked battery while attempting a landing at Dany on February 1. The attack served as a feint to cover the operation, with a Russian battery mounted for such contingency sweeping the shore and inflicting heavy losses.
A five story brick building housing several publishing firms including Chapple Press Tinkham Press and Potter Watson Shoe Counter Company suffered a major blaze. Firefighters faced frozen hydrants delays and locked steel shutters as flames spread through upper floors stocked with ink and paper. Neighbors were evacuated as the blaze continued to burn briskly with smoke and cinders rising from the roof.
Report notes Russia's reaction to the Chinese note incident closed without Russia replying. Alexieff informs the Czar of Port Arthur attack dated Feb 9 but omits Russian ships/ losses. The will of Miss Mary Sophia Walker of Waltham filed in Middlesex County Court calls for a Protestant Episcopal cathedral in Massachusetts to be built in Boston. The residue funds support the project with $50,000 for repair, and estates in Watertown and Waltham may house a bishop’s residence and church work. A $100,000 fund and other bequests to churches hospitals and missions are specified.
