Canton Ohio February 17 Major McKinley is better this evening after a short drive with Mrs McKinley at his side Doctors expect him to regain his usual health by early next week if improvement continues and he refrains from work Friends fear a relapse due to his age and strength He has seen only Mr Hanna today who reports he is recovering well.
In Lawrence on February 17 a heated Common Council session pit Democrats led by President Andrew J. McCarthy against Republicans. McCarthy, accused of betraying his party, voted for GOP officials and kept the session late. Councilmen O'Brien and Bradley were suspended, shifting the chamber to a Republican majority as allies vow another move at the next meeting.
Letter from M J Moloney praises The Post as the paper of record noting sales rose from 20 to 100 in the past year. He declares long may it sail o er the sea of prosperity and signs the note.
Washington on February seventeenth reports a Thursday forecast for New England with generally fair conditions, possible local showers in the northern portion, westerly winds and cooler Thursday night.

Beverly resident John S. Baker, noted citizen and public servant, died at 9:30 p.m. He served as town clerk, selectman, county commissioner, state representative and senator, and was Beverly’s first mayor. Born August 16, 1812, he helped found the Republican party and advocated temperance and abolition in a long career shaping the city’s growth.
Governor Bushnell and Republican State chairman Kurtz held a long conference in Columbus to decide on a vacancy in the United States Senate. It was reported the appointment would not go to Chairman Hanna, and the governor had not yet decided. Kurtz could take the seat, otherwise Lieutenant Governor Jones would likely be appointed.
W S Hart leading man of Under the Polar Star at Boston Theatre took a dose of carbolic acid yesterday morning by mistake. He was attended by a physician and is not expected to have a serious outcome. He resides at the Bowdoin Hotel near Bowdoin Square.
Rear Admiral Edmund B. Calhoun United States Navy retired died in Washington from heart failure. Born in Pennsylvania May 6 1821 he joined the navy April 1 1839 and served in the Mexican War and the Civil War with distinction.
Fire and police battled several arson attempts at a four story brick building at 994 Tremont Street between 4 PM yesterday and 8 PM last night. The ground floor shop and upper rooms are occupied by Mrs Mullin and family, with oil soaked documents and kerosene evidence found in a third floor closet. A blood stained handkerchief and kerosene bottle fragment were recovered as guards kept vigil overnight.
The Post could not verify a fire event near 994 Tremont Street. Box 215 responded at 3 52 predawn. fire was out upon arrival as District Chief Grady slept. Fire Marshal Whitcomb and Mr Dunn gave conflicting or no information. neighbors heard little, and 94 Tremont Street residents were unroused.
Cornell University accepts Harvard Boat Club proposal admitting Yale to this year’s Harvard Cornell race. Cornell proposes Pennsylvania and Columbia join as well, with potential race dates June 20 or July 2. Enthusiasm runs high as Cornell recalls its long desire to race Yale since 1875.
Gloucester reports no word from the schooner Lizzie J. Greenleaf which sailed December 30 for Grand Bank with 22 000 pounds of halibut. Sightings by Geor gie Campbell and Gladiator place her three weeks past bound home. Built in 1888, 8810 tons, owned by Captain Nathaniel Greenleaf, insured for 3233 on vessel and 1600 on outfit, valued with outfit at 750 a.
A grand Mardi Gras style imperial reception by the Mystic Order of Giasticulus marks the first Bunker Hill Day carnival event in Roughan Hall Charlestown. King Andrew I and Queen Ella Baldwin lead a colorful procession with costumes from Persian to Mexican themes as crowds cheer and royal officials are introduced.
The hall hosted a grand masquerade with 75 couples in dance led by Sir William H. Oakes and Mayor Quincy. Notable attendees included Miss Lillian Baldwin and Miss Mamie Driscoll in period roles. A 61 year old dancer, Andrew Burnett, broke his left leg mid dance and was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.
The New England Amateur Rowing Association accepted Mayor Quincy’s $1200 pledge for the Fourth of July regatta on the Charles River at a stormy meeting in the American House. Springfield delegates fought the decision but were outvoted by one ballot. John P. Coogan of the Springfield Boat Club was named to the organizing committee.
Captain Hamilton telegraphs from Middletown that the Howard H. Peck, missing for a month, rode three Gulf crossings and arrived at Darien Georgia last night. All hands are safe and no cargo was lost.

The ministry of marine seeks a 500000 pound Turkish loan to fund fleet mobilization. Two squadrons are formed. First squadron of four war ships and ten torpedo boats sails in five days under Vice Admiral Faik. Second squadron led by Vice Admiral Hassan includes five war ships and ten torpedo boats. Fifty thousand naval reserves join with Redifs from Salonika and Trebizond, totaling 76800 men near the Greek frontier.
