Society’s Work At Meeting Reports Dogged Cruelty Findings
At the February directors meeting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals President Angell announced 3000 from the Darrah estate was added to the permanent fund, used for interest only. In thirty-two years only two deaths by hydrophobia were reported in Boston. It is estimated nearly 2,000,000 cattle suffered last winter from neglect and starvation. The society seeks to curb branding cruelty, plans paid agents in cities, and offers 200 for evidence to convict lawbreakers protecting insect eating birds. A committee including Cobb, Russell, O Reilly, Donnelly, Sawyer, Baldwin, Sturgis, Forbes, Noyes, and Hill will petition for a law to require teachers to educate pupils on protecting insect eating birds and kindness to lower animals. Boston agents handled 145 cruelty complaints, prosecuted twelve, convicted eight, with two pending. Thirty-nine animals were humanely killed. The president spoke to forty-seven large Boston schools. there are now 5144 bands of mercy.
