The Oregon Notice and the Death of Joseph Hall Jr
In New York on February 14 1846 reports detail the suicide of Joseph Hall Jr amid financial worry. A hotel owner and a cautious friend describe the precipitating debts and pride that led to his death. The letter-writer notes the Oregon notice, the Clayton debate in the Senate, and references to Madame Costello and other figures as public opinion shifts on women midwives.

Petition debates and bills in the Massachusetts House
The chamber heard petitions from Frederick W. Blodgett and others against the Nashua and Lowell railroad and others urging various local measures. Committees reported on savings bank provisions for married and unmarried women, and a plan to limit mortgage revivals. The House rejected a repeal amendment, then adopted a revised report on school fund allocations and prepared further handling of related notices. Adjournment followed as committee work continued on rail and corporate matters.
