Review of Mrs Sherwoods John Marten and Claiborne the Rebel

The Harpers edition of John Marten by Mrs Sherwood is praised for its print and price though the reviewer desires less sermonizing in fiction. A separate note reviews W H Carpenter’s Claiborne the Rebel set in Maryland before Cromwell’s protectorate, praised for narrative energy but faulted for too many principal characters and not enough character depth.

Sub-letter mischief and reflections from a colonial tale

A reader recounts a slave Pompey misunderstanding a master’s love letter in a humorous dialect, noting his confusion over proper phrases. The piece then touches on a Jon Bull and Frenchman tale, a Burns anecdote, and praises a review of Professor Treadwell’s improved cannon. It closes with a remark on the Knickerbocker’s Editor’s Table being poorly set yet containing many good items.
