The legislative committee on constitutional amendments held a six hour session debating suffragists and anti suffragists. The crowded Capitol room 240 saw lively exchanges with laughter applause and sharp repartee as both sides pressed their arguments before Senator Hobbs.
Mrs. Loral L. Bates testified that her husband and his spirit companion Mrs. Rose Manning share one soul. Bates told her each was a complement of the other and they were the same person. The Bates family lived in a tar-paper shack at Ward Hill and no defense was offered. A brother and sister of Bates are aiding the prosecution, a surprise at the trial’s end.
In the August to October period Mrs. Manning testified Bates answered her remonstrance about his relation with the woman. She described their sleeping arrangement as three bunks and a couch bed, noting Bates often shared the same bed with Mrs. Manning.
Massachusetts House passes bill to recognize New Year's Day as a legal holiday after a heated debate. Proponent Haines of Medford argues the state is prosperous enough to observe the day, while opponent Washburn of Worcester says laborers should earn a day’s pay and that there are already enough holidays.
Annie Heirty a 19 year old mesh bag holder on West Ninth street was robbed by two men who seized her arm and took a bag containing 3.50 in cash eyeglasses a Boston Elevated badge and a rosary. Officers arrested Albert Leary 20 and Frank Sheehan 16 on Dorchester street and they will be arraigned in South Boston Municipal Court.
Governor Walsh will name former Massachusetts Chief Justice Hosea K. Knowlton as chairman of the Boston & Maine board of trustees at a final DOJ New Haven conference in Washington. The talks settle the Boston & Maine relinquishment terms and aim to keep trustees free from financial influence, serving public duty in New England.
Thomas St. John aged 39 at work on the steam ship Alaunia at Cunard docks East Boston entangled in a rope by a steam winch and his left arm torn free before power could be shut off. He died at East Boston Relief Hospital at midnight. Unmarried, he boarded at 34 Haynes Street East Boston.

Boston and vicinity expect fair weather with little temperature change on Tuesday and Wednesday. In northern New England the forecast calls for fair but continued cold conditions with strong north to northwest winds. Southern New England also stays fair and cold with high northwest winds. Yesterday’s observed temperatures show average readings around the low 20s for many stations.
Police guard the Longfellows after three letters threaten death destruction to property and kidnapping of two children. The messages, written by an untrained hand, demand ten thousand dollars left under a rock at Warren and Allston streets or else the family will be harmed. A washer-filled box under the stone prompted heavy police surveillance since Saturday.
Unseen threats target the Longfellow family amid Mrs. Longfellow’s ill health. The letter writer, believed to be a former employee discharged from a crew building bungalows and apartments in Allston, seeks 10000 dollars as revenge. The family vows vigilance and readiness if the suspect returns.
State's Attorney Judson quashed manslaughter indictments against five New Haven and Hartford railroad officials over the 1912 Westport wreck in which seven people died. Former President Charles S. Mellen remains indicted on one count and will face trial.
Nine transatlantic steamships are overdue in Boston including the Marquette from Antwerp with 25 cabin passengers and freighters Mancaster Castle India from Yokohama Hong Kong Kathlamba from Calcutta Zydyk from Ateeaang Toronto from Hull Georgian from Manchester and Arkansas Maryland from Copenhagen.
The Fabre Steamship liner Roma with 448 passengers and 100 crew ran ashore at No Man’s Land during a hurricane and blizzard. After a six hour battle with heavy seas a tug aided its backing off the rocky shore bound from Marseilles to Providence and New York. Distress calls reached the Itasca Acushnet and Gresham as brave life savers responded.
A fierce 70 mph gale delayed aid to the Roma as Gay Head life savers failed to launch under a brutal sea. Revenue cutters Itasca and Acushnet fought the storm for hours, reaching the stranded ship near Nantucket after it misrouted two miles from its course.
In New York on February 16 a first car of an elevated train toppled from its structure and dropped about 35 feet into Eighth Avenue at 138th Street. Motorman John H. Becker escaped unharmed after the end of the car buried in a gutter snowdrift. The wreck occurred when two empty trains collided on nearby dead tracks as the evening rush ended, drawing pedestrians away with time to flee.
Harmony improved Boost Boston prospects after a city hall meeting led by Mayor Curley. Former Mayor Fitzgerald endorsed the effort and committed $280 to the booster fund, joining business leaders and officials in urging cooperation.
At a Boston gathering, present Mayor Curley and former Mayor FitzGerald sat together, shook hands, and praised the city’s industrial and commercial boom. FitzGerald called the movement “more promising” than any prior Boston effort.
