Miss Mary Bennett age 85 of 56 Granger Street Dorchester died at home yesterday at 1 30 p m. Her long residence in St Peter's parish marked her as one of its oldest residents.
A Sydney despatch reports Dr. Douglas Mawson and the Antarctic expedition party aboard the relief ship Aurora. All members are said to be well after three months without word. Mawson led a 1911 expedition of 50 men from Australia and New Zealand, financed by public subscription, aiming to map and survey from Cape Adare to Gaussburg over more than 2000 miles.
Washington February 16 Former Senator Eugene Hale of Maine is in critical condition from paralysis, struck yesterday. Due to his advanced age he may not recover. He will be 77 next June. His wife and son Colonel Frederick Hale reached his bedside from Portland tonight.
A $15 000 safe was robbed at the Hanover street store of E. E. Gray Company in daylight yesterday. It is described as the most daring burglary in New England history and the largest ever in the state. The thieves left a complete burglar outfit worth about $300 and failed to take $300 in silver along with checks, notes, and other cashable documents.
Thieves carried away a large stash of currency and stamps weighing 15 to 25 pounds, plus heavier silver. The double door safe was drilled and blown by nitroglycerin and electricity to open the combination. The robbery, discovered as watchmen entered at 6 last night, occurred while the store was unguarded between 12 and 6 pm Sunday. The exit was a rear basement door near the elevator, left unfastened, letting the thieves flee unseen.
New York hotel announces a 10 percent reduction on all checks over 50 cents to replace tips and relieve guests from paying for service twice. A line on menus notes the deduction, and guests are said to understand it as an effort to address tipping concerns.
Washington February 16 A despatch reports the Cuban cruiser Cuba flagship of the Cuban navy reached Vera Cruz today. A special permit from the Madero government allows infantry and artillery to be landed and taken to Mexico City to protect the Cuban legation and Cuban citizens.
