Augusta Chronicle Marks Centennial With Centennial Edition
The Augusta Chronicle born in 1785 plans March centennial edition of 60000 copies for Georgia and South Carolina. It will be distributed at the New Orleans exposition as part of a wave of upcoming newspaper centennials. The Cincinnati Commercial notes McDonald would extend Hugh McCulloch’s financial policies, especially on silver and the national bank, a view believed shared by Mr Cleveland.

Protectionists organize tariff league amid labor absence
A review argues a national Protective Tariff league is led by monopolists and manufacturers while workers stay away, exposing the hypocrisy of protecting labor through high tariffs on goods labor buys. It lauds Hon. P. A. Collins as a model self-made reformer and notes various social snippets and anecdotes.

Fragments From A Turbulent New York Evening Paper
A collage of light gossip and political skirmishes featuring figures such as Daniel Manning and Cleveland, remarks on Boston social tensions, and notes on legal changes, with scattered references to New York City employment, the Georgia bar, and Spain Italy Naples sanitation plans. A satirical mood threads through editorials and brief anecdotes about public figures and cultural events.
State rail consolidation plan echoes historic Western Worcester merger
The proposal notes that only common stock is represented and that bondholder interests in other roads would be protected by the pool. It argues bonds covering state interest could face future financial risk and cites precedent from the 1867 Western and Boston and Worcester union, praised for benefiting state and stockholders.

The Journal mocks the printed net profits in Massachusetts industries calling the figures alleged. The piece argues the figures stem from the 1883 report of the bureau of statistics of labor and accuses the Journal of ridiculing and doubting them to cast doubt on protectionist aims.

Debtor’s Defiant Oath Amid Winter Strife
