A runaway horse on Moody street ran onto the Fitchburg line near Stony Brook station causing a freight wreck west of the bridge. East bound No 26 was detained. several cars derailed and a fire damaged cars but no lives were lost. Cleanup expected by morning.
The Young Men's Catholic Association held a grand ball in Mechanics Hall with a glittering procession led by Mayor Quincy. Governor Wolcott was absent. General Dalton and other officials attended amid bright colors, elegant costumes, and a Germania orchestra providing music for about 250 couples on the dance floor.
