The cabinet orders a peremptory request to Germany to release two American sailors held as prisoners after Germany had agreed to their release. Officials fault Germany’s attitude and insist on urgent action to secure liberty for the men.
Washington reports an inquiry to Berlin about the detention of 72 American sailors from Yarrowdale, as the Cabinet pressed for their immediate release and a firm protest. In Concord, Feb 13, Major Ralph G. Carpenter and his wife spar over custody of their son Ralph G. Carpenter Jr. after a forceful 1915 hotel taking. The ongoing Superior Court hearing seeks temporary custody with the mother currently in charge.
Presque Isle Me Feb 13 Four buildings storing 10000 barrels of potatoes valued at over 50000 dollars were destroyed by fire at Maysville siding near town. Eight thousand barrels were lost in a similar fire yesterday. Forty to fifty tons of fertilizer burned, total loss near 90000 dollars. Newson McLeod Co of Boston owned nearly half the potatoes. Fire reportedly started in a Bangor & Aroostook Railroad freight car.
The prosecution in federal court featured her former sweetheart testifying against Mrs Charlotte Therek and her husband Edward Therek who pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting a $20000 embezzlement from the National Shawmut Bank where he worked as a messenger last autumn.

Lloyds shipping agency reports the White Star line steamship Afric of 11 999 tons gross was sunk by a submarine off Cape Town. Part of the crew landed. 17 crewmen reported missing. The Afric had capacity for about 500 passengers and served Liverpool, Cape Town and Australia.
White Star Line officials said no word had been received from the Adriatic after she left New York February 3. The liner, largest in the transatlantic service, carried 44 passengers including one American and is expected to reach Liverpool tomorrow or Thursday after likely being off course to avoid submarines, delaying her schedule by a day or two.
