Washington February 11 American ship owners who have kept vessels in port due to gun shortages may soon obtain weapons for submarine defense. Official quarters signaled a solution in the next few days though the government will not arm ships directly or issue formal guidance.
Former United States Ambassador James W. Gerard and about 120 Americans departed Berlin on their way to Switzerland. The envoy and staff left at 8 10 o clock tonight, with 110 additional Americans joining the party, arriving in Berne early tonight.

Mrs. George A. Draper died within a day of her daughter's wedding at 297 Commonwealth Avenue. The bride Helen H. Draper had wed Walbridge S. Taft, nephew of former President William H. Taft. Mrs. Draper was General William Preston’s daughter, linked to Kentucky politics and Civil War history. funeral services are private at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

In Biddeford Maine on February 11 a fire at J Milton Forbes home rescued fourteen children aged 1 to 14 who were asleep when flames were discovered. The York County Children's Aid Society boarded the youngsters at the house.
Mr Forbes aided by family and neighbors made repeated trips through smoke to rescue the last child. He was slightly burned on face and hands while carrying two babies. The children suffered from cold as the temperature stood four below zero. The fire, likely from defective wiring, did not reach the house ell and losses were not heavy.
