Rats Invade Everett City Basement in Hapgood Building

In Everett on July 11 the Hapgood building at Church street and Broadway houses city offices. The corner grocer occupies one storefront while the post office sits next door. The basement, from cellar to roof, is infested with rats, a problem residents say has persisted for some time.

Irish Language School Session at St James Notes

The Philo Celtic Society held a Sunday session for Irish language study at St James Archial School, 6 Whitmore Street, from 3 to 4 16. Daniel P. O Callaghan led with assistants Daniel Cashman and Miss M J Donovan. After instruction a pleasant hour followed with John P Lane delivering an English address, John Donohue reciting in Irish, and Miss Donovan reading a story. A special business meeting is set for Thursday evening February 16.

Fire Damages Wooden Building at 12 Sumner Street

Fire yesterday morning caused about $300 damage to a wooden building at 12 Sumner Street occupied by J. H. Marquand ship caulkers. The cause is unknown.

Higgins Pledges Global Evangelization Duty

Higgins described his duties and pledged to evangelize the whole world. Elder Ralph Gleason gave a sermon. Five converts came forward at the alter, one claiming a heart disease cure. Until 2 10 Mr Sandford prayed for sinners in the convert room, with appeals heard below and pent up repentance turning to joy among a diverse crowd.

Sousa Band Concerts Delight Boston Theatre Audience

Sousa and his band headlined at the Boston Theatre with two enjoyable concerts. The soprano Blanche Duffield sang Pearl of Brazil well, cornetist Herbert T. Clarke drew strong praise, and Bertha Bucklin gave excellent work. The ensemble, led by Sousa, received enthusiastic applause for both performances.

Hospital Concert Brightens US Marine Hospital Patients

A 2 pm concert by the Hospital Music Fund energized patients at the United States Marine Hospital. Apollo Male Quartet Astrellas and Mrs. Pearl performed, with Dr. Dixwell selecting numbers. Flowers from friends added to the wards, under fund members. Next Sunday inmates at the United States Naval Hospital will be visited. Fund headquarters: 52 West Cedar Street.

Memorial Service for Rev Edward Porter Held in Lexington

In Lexington a memorial service honored Rev Edward G Porter a longtime pastor from 1863 to 1898 at the Congregational church. Speakers included Rev J H Cox Rev Co F Carter Rev C A Staples and Rev Cyrus Hamlin who shared anecdotes and reflections. Ed win D Mead recalled a twenty five year friendship with Porter.

Charlestown Neck playground plan announced

Secretary Clarke of the Boston Park Commission said conversion of the old mill pond at Charlestown Neck into a public playground will take at least three months. Tenants have one month to vacate, leaving a single transfer station at Main and Alford. An iron fence section contract is let, enclosing fourteen acres. Flower beds and grass plots will be dispensed with, border trees to be planted near the fence.

Division 4 officers arrested 27 year old Mary Cotter of 12 Pleasant Street yesterday on charges of stealing a watch and chain valued at 21 dollars and a pair of shoes valued at 3 50 from James Smith of 228 Shawmut Avenue on Webber Street 11.
