Kept an Open Bar at No 8 Boylston Place Club
In municipal court Joseph Brignoli an employee of the Cosmopolitan Club at 18 Boylston Place was fined $50 for serving liquor to non members. The Post reports long abuse of the special license at No 18 with non members gaining admission by bell and door, making the place resemble an ordinary bar on Sundays and after hours. Evidence shows Charlie the boss and Joe the helper ran a lively operation with keys bought by patrons and frequent after hour crowds. The Cosmopolitan charter from January 1888 aimed to provide social recreation for foreigners in Boston. Despite the revelations, the club’s owners paid $50 and faced little ground for complaint overall.

Rumors describe one or two major factions driving a coal strike in London as unions vow to keep all workers idle while the shippers' federation backs the employers if needed. Playwright Michael Henry, who organized the coalers' union in 1887, calls the move untimely and predicts failure. He notes coalers earn 42 to 46 shillings weekly and are among the best paid in the city, so public sympathy may be limited.

Free coinage bill outlined by House panel sparks party clash
Washington Feb 10 The free coinage bill mandates a standard silver dollar of 412.5 grains or gold dollar of 25.8 grains as legal tender. It allows bullion holders to have bullion coined free, or receive coin notes equal to value, and cancels prior silver certificates. It envisions coin notes up to 10 dollars and repeals the 1890 act, with France’s open mints triggering a new silver standard. Congressman Raynor warns enactment would wreck the Democratic party and trigger national panic and bankruptcy, though the measure is deemed unlikely to become law.
