Paris February 9 Georges Clemenceau French premier says the war is won but a lull in the storm may mislead. He warns that a chaotic but fruitful Russia could still aid Germany and fears a renewed military debate unless Wilson’s pledge to defend freedom stands.
The premier urged the Society of Nations to renounce traditional aloofness and embrace cooperation among member states. The statement signals a push for closer international engagement and shared responsibilities on global issues.
Colonel Edward L. Logan of the 101st Infantry wired his father General Lawrence J. Logan confirming orders to return to his old regiment. The cablegram arrived after press dispatches reported the move.
The colonel said his father should convey the sincere thanks of the commander of the 01st to friends in this country for their confidence. Tie added he never doubted the outcome of his case. Logan's cablegram to General Logan in Boston ordered him to rejoin his regiment and to express thanks.
Paris reports a troop train collision on the Bordeaux line injuring twelve American soldiers eight seriously. The wreck near the Anteuil tunnel saw a coach handover by Germans erupt in flames. A clockwork mechanism found in debris is claimed to explain the accident.
Refugees of various nations report that Bolshevism is at a critical point. They fear it may tilt toward imperialism with Leon Trotzky as emperor or revert to nihilistic disorder under a controlled regime. The dispatch from Warsaw dated February 7 outlines the tension and possible directions.
Sixty five members of the National Woman's Party were arrested after burning an effigy of President Wilson in front of the White House to protest the Senate's likely defeat of the equal suffrage resolution. Several thousand watched. women from 16 states refused bond and were jailed for trial. Uniontown, PA reported Mrs. Havemeyer among the arrestees.
A three foot paper effigy of the President was carried from suffrage headquarters by Misses Sue White of Nashville and Garriel Harris of Columbia as about 19 women paraded with suffrage banners. The crowd heard speeches before police intervened and many were taken to patrol wagons after protests continued. State delegations were limited to two, led by Mrs. H. O. Havemeyer of New York and Elizabeth McShane.
President Wilson spent a quiet Sunday in Paris after a strenuous week. He attended church with Mrs. Wilson, traveled by automobile in the frosty air, and received William G. Sharp the American ambassador. He will meet a Paris law college delegation and a committee of English women connected to the interallied women’s conference.
In Barrington Rhode Island on Tiffany Pond two pupils from St. Andrew's Industrial School, C. Leslie Tasker aged 12 and Robert C. Bowman aged 18, fell through ice while leading a group crossing toward St. John's Church. The two others escaped. Tasker and Bowman were recovered dead about 30 minutes later.
In Oyster Bay New York on February 9 the national flower committee of the General Federation of Women's Clubs laid a laurel wreath on Theodore Roosevelt's grave. Mrs William M Wauters of New York chaired the ceremony as the federation endorses laurel as the national flower.
President Wilson and Secretary Lansing attended a memorial for Theodore Roosevelt at the American Church in Paris. A separate service in Rome and observances across Boston and New England reflected a national tribute. Senator Lodge delivered a notable Washington Capitol eulogy as Americans from diverse faiths joined in reverent remembrance.
