New York reports that the German cruiser Roon, said to have seized the Appam, was captured by the British battleship Drake after a three hour fight about 200 miles east northeast of Bermuda. The tale appeared in the New York Evening Globe.
A two alarm blaze in a three story brick building at 114 120 Mt Pleasant Ave Roxbury drove eight families from their homes. The second floor fire started at 116 an unoccupied unit and forced the Cohen family and others to flee to safety via roof and fire escape. Neighbors Croxford and Connelly alerted authorities. Loss estimated around $1000.
Alfred S. Hall Jr. son of Revere City Council Chairman and Katheryn A. Corbett daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Corbett of Sea View Revere eloped to Portsmouth New Hampshire and were married yesterday by City Clerk Frederic E. Drew. They had planned to keep the wedding secret for a year. They made two trips to Portsmouth, filing intentions last Thursday and returning yesterday for the license and ceremony.
A hot water boiler exploded in the wash yard of the Charles street jail around 9 PM causing a two and a half story wing to shatter. The copper boiler flew over a 20 foot fence into the city yard and shattered glass in the east wing of the men's side. The cause remains unknown.
