Washington report states Congressman Whiting will not run for reelection this fall. He informs friends he will not pursue the governorship now, though he may consider it later. Whiting, noted for banking committee work, leaves a significant gap in Massachusetts Republican ranks as district campaigns begin.
A Kings County Democratic Club dinner in Brooxlm N Y honors Samuel J Tilden on his birthday with 310 covers. Guests include Governor Hill and Samuel J Randall as letters from Cleveland and cabinet members are read. Judge Van Wyck presides. Senators Sherman and Goff attend a Home Market Club gathering in Tremont Temple Boston with 500 guests.
The February meeting of the Association of the Relief Officers of the Poor was held at the Quircy House. The stock market has been fairly active, but somewhat irregular with Atchison and the coppers noted as prominent features. The English high school class of 76 held its reunion and business meeting.
A special meeting of the Republican State committee accepted a report by a sub committee finding neither the sitting member George H. Fairbairn nor the contestant Harrison H. Atwood entitled to the seat in the third Suffolk district. A vacancy on the committee was declared and a planning committee named for the Massachusetts delegation’s visit to the national convention in Chicago.
A compiled ship note lists arrivals and departures across Atlantic ports. Creators include Matthew Kedlington from New Orleans at Antwerp and various liners such as Exeter City in Bristol route, Sorrento in Hamburg from New York, and Wisconsin from New York to Liverpool.
London February 9 Parliament assembles with the Queen's speech. It notes Afghanistan boundary demarcation with Russia, efforts to avert war with Abyssinia, Suez talks with France, and plans for Irish reforms and local government. Gladstone criticizes coercion, urges Ireland rights, and outlines upcoming Irish and English measures and procedures.
The Gloucester Fishermen and Seamen Widows and Orphans Aid Society reelected its old officers at its annual meeting. Reports show 1886 contributions of 9197, 1887 donors 1827 75, estates from J Fortune and Abbie Somes, and various expenses including allowances, fuel, groceries, printing, bonds, and interest totaling multiple thousand dollars.
Harmon W. L. Mc Auliffe aged 7 died after colliding with a train wheel while coasting on Cowdrey's Hill. Several other boys were slightly injured in the incident near Waxerre ro.
The Chicago sub committee of the Republican national committee met at Grand Pacific to arrange the convention. Members including Clarkson Hobart and Conger discussed Blaine Sherman and the Ohio delegation. They also debated whether delegates at large should be chosen by district or state conventions.
The Maine department G A R encampment opened at Park Theatre with 149 posts and 9288 members, one new post and two charters surrendered. Sons of Veterans report 36 camps and 636 members. 267 member families and 171 nonmembers assisted, total expenses 812181, receipts 580471. Banquet planned for 520 at City Hall tomorrow. Commander-in-Chief Rea due at noon.
Feb 9 report says the general executive board asked President Corbin about settling the dispute with railroad workers. The reply reportedly refused to concede to a strike but promised fair consideration of grievances once work resumes and potential arbitration if needed. Also, 200 cigar factory workers struck after a cut in free cigars per day, with the firm citing tough competition and the loss of 4000 gratis weekly cigars.
New York reports arriving ships and cargoes with arrivals from Bremen Antwerp Havana and Mayaguez. Vessels cleared include Rhaetia Vo plane City of Alexandria and many others sailing for Liverpool Hamburg Havana and antiwerp. Noted losses include the St Olaves with crew rescued after sinking and a drowning incident aboard the St Olaves crew member Mat Lawton lost overboard.
The Worcester County Musical Association held its annual meeting today in Worcester. The old board of officers was re elected and the symphony concerts lost money while the music festival made a profit. The association reported 19 724 40 on hand including a 5000 gift from Charles Davis. Secretary Munroy expressed hope for the future and pledged efforts to continue the symphony course with continued support.
A snow blockade halted the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic line west of Seney, with express and freight trains blocked. Temperatures plunged across Michigan from Alpena at 20 below to Ishpeming 35 below and Mackinaw City 22 below, signaling record cold.
Members of the Boston Ideal Banjo Mandolin and Guitar Club entertained the Boston Press Club. The group includes A. L. Lan sing, A. D. Grover, H. W. Harris, B. E. Shattuck and L. H. R. Galencia. Lansing impressed with banjo solos and songs, Grover with a clever banjo trick.
