Three Rescued From Charles River at Waltham
In Waltham on February 8 two men and a 12 year old boy were rescued from the Charles River after breaking through ice near the Prospect street bridge. Officer Daniel McLeod, F W Coleman, and Patrick Coughlin aided in pulling all three to safety as onlookers cheered from the banks. The water was deep and currents strong as the trio fought to reach shore.

Engineer Faces Delicate Jump Over Sinking Bridge
In Los Angeles on February 8 engineer W Baldwin of the Santa Fe San Bernardino division chose to stay with his engine as a five car train slid down grade toward a sagging concrete bridge over the Arroyo Seco. The raging torrent undermined the piling and the bridge began to tilt while Baldwin hesitated between fleeing or piloting the engine across to safety.
