In Providence R I on Feb 7 James Hekey a young mechanic was shot outside Jack Drury saloon on Valley Street by Harry Sweeney an old friend The altercation began with a quarrel inside the saloon and resumed on the sidewalk after Hekey left with his sisters A struggle followed and Sweeney fled to the police station escaping death or serious injury The incident drew a large crowd and witnesses describe rapid gunfire and a dangerous confrontation with potential murder charges likely.

Embiricos Sinkings Off Scilly Islands Tragedy

Hotel Royal Fire Kills and Sparks Surviving Escape

A devastating blaze at the Hotel Royal on Fortieth street and Sixth avenue in New York city early today left many dead injured and missing. About 120 guests and 55 employees were present with at least fifty five reported dead and hundreds endangered by smoke and flames. Fire spread rapidly through an elevator shaft and upper floors as guests leapt from windows seeking escape. Ezra D. Durand, president of the Durand Organ & Piano Company in PorrianoD Ore, is the subject of a warrant for forgery. He left town Friday. his whereabouts are unknown. The firm, started two years ago with 200000 capital, issued notes to obtain stock and raise funds for real estate speculation, later mortgaging assets and issuing forced notes. Attachments recently began against holders of the notes, risking heavy losses to stockholders.
