A mystery surrounds who leaked the grand jury proceedings that allowed "Big Bill" Kelcher to learn George W. Coleman's testimony before his indictment. Authorities search for the covert source amid state inquiry.
Boston police seek 25 year old Jack Wren or Jack Ware native of Nova Scotia. He is 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 200 pounds. He is wanted for the murder of James Stewart Hamilton, a railroad construction foreman whose battered body was found yesterday morning in Hinsdale New Hampshire.
Frederick Beach of New York testified he did not assault his wife in an Aiken county case. Mrs Beach backed his denial. The jury was to decide tomorrow if Beach committed the assault after witnesses and rebuttal testimony, including the "man behind the bookcase" Haddon Johnson, a local reporter, who overheard a mayor’s office discussion.
The Governor's Council asks Attorney General Swift for guidance on whether it can place conditions on Cardenio F. King's pardon. Lieutenant Governor Walsh favors release only if King agrees to never engage in business.
District Attorney Joseph C. Pelletier confirms a transcript copy was provided to United States District Attorney Asa P. French and later to Attorney Coakley for the defendant Kelcher. French says the defense had knowledge of Suffolk county grand jury proceedings, but he does not know their source or accuracy.
Hinsdale officials telegraphed Boston police to arrest Wren or Ware on sight on a murder charge. Holbrook Cabot Rollins, the Boston construction firm employing Hamilton, offers a $1000 reward for his murderer or murderers. Hamilton, formerly in Rochester coal and iron, had headed 1000 men at the Hinsdale Brattleboro railroad project. his body was found near the house of William D. Adams after the workers were paid off.
Two hundred guests at the Bay Staite Hotel on Hanover Street were awakened by a loft fire at 14 and 16 Webster Avenue a few doors away. Dense smoke from D Fopiano’s paint shop filled the street as Captain William Riley of Engine 4 slipped and injured his back assisting efforts. Unknown cause, damage about 300 dollars.
The prosecutor grilled Beach and his wife at length about prior statements they made, noting differences from their current testimony. Mrs. Beach described a “gingerbread colored” man assaulting her with a slashed throat and a stick blow, claiming she feared to scream until her husband arrived. She said robbery motive was not part of her narrative. Beach could not recall any mayoral conversation referenced in the testimony.
Robert I. Stewart a 35 year old mounted officer of the metropolitan park police is at Massachusetts General Hospital likely dying from a fractured skull and brain concussion after being thrown from his horse as the animal shied on Hull side street opposite Houghton s Pond in the Blue Hill Reservation at about 430 yesterday afternoon
Officer Cornelius Sheehan located Stewart with a severe head wound after a collision near a stone wall. Stewart’s horse returned riderless to the police stable as a search went out for the rider. He resided at 19 Heathcote Street Roslindale with a wife and seven children. a three year veteran of the Metropolitan Park force and former Boston fire department member.
A $1000 bank roll hidden in a mattress by Miss Minnie Rogers of 411 Shawmut Avenue led Station 5 police on a pursuit last night. A man who visited the house was suspected of stealing the money and fled, but officers later uncovered the roll in a mattress hole.
The Council with Governor consent plans a pardon for King that amounts to a parole under Prison Commission constraints and added limits. Attorney General to be consulted to define the Council’s authority, while Lieutenant Governor Walsh argues against a full pardon and favors restrictions. King says he would accept dying at home, but imminent death is not certain.
William J. Delory of Roxbury received a $1000 verdict in Norfolk Superior Court at Dedham after a jury sealed verdict opened. Delory had sued Charles A. Eaton, a wealthy farmer of Westwood, for $2000 alleging alienation of his wife’s affections.
George C. Pearson of 43 St. Germain street Back Bay a chauffeur for Edwin A Curtis collector of the port of Boston was severely burned about the face and arms while attempting to extinguish a fire in the collector s automobile on What street Jamaica Plain yesterday afternoon
