In Berlin the Reichstag endorsed the government's foreign policy with credit for its colonial aims. Chancellor von Caprivi defended measures over the Witu massacre in East Africa, blaming Kuenzel for the killings and noting burial delays by natives. Windthorst and Helldorf backed the Congo Act and funding for ongoing policy.
A dispatch from Chili via Lima Peru reports Iquique port, where the despatch originated, momentarily expected to be bombarded by Chilean insurgents as tensions rise in the region.
In Barcelona on February 6 the Conservative candidate for the Chamber of Deputies defeated Republican leader Senor Salmeron by 5874 votes to 5285. Five hundred furnace men at Illinois Steel Company South Chicago are on strike after several helpers were discharged. They demand wage advances. the strike has effectively shut down the big rolling mills in the plant.
Long strike ends as work at the Edison building on Broad Street is to resume by Monday with full force. Police withdrew, walking delegates left, and union men kept silent on the understanding reached. Earlier, a clash among cloakmakers at 264 Broome Street left Samuel Solomon and Joseph Edelstein injured, with Edelstein suffering a broken nose.
Prttspura Pennsylvania Feb 6. The Pittsburg report of a planned tie up of lines west of Pittsburg affecting 30,000 men was denied by General Manager Head who said no trouble exists and that employees are awaiting the General Grievance Committee's response. A telegram from a committee member also denies any connection to the report.
Strikers at Hargraves Mill meet and vote to remain from work awaiting developments. Some vacancies filled but about 150 rooms remain idle. Le Weavers Union will not take official action to support those out.
Several hundred shipyard workers at the St Petersburg Admiralty dock yard went on strike over wage cuts and harsh treatment by the admiral. They marched to the admiral's headquarters and mobbed him as he tried to argue with them.
