In Washington on February 6, Republican Senators held a harmonious caucus to set the remaining session agenda. They named eight hour, copyright, Nicaragua canal, pure food, Conger Jard, land court, bankruptcy, interstate commerce, and Pacific railroad refunding bills for consideration in order, with allowance to skip if opposition threatens delay.
The Alaska Commercial Company says it is out of fur sealing. Its lease on Copper Behring and Robin Islands expires February 14. A 4 year old son of Henry Trask of Chesterfield perished when a house fire swept through their home in Northamprton last night. With no water and few neighbors available, firefighters could not save the child as the dwelling burned completely while the parents were away.
A stream of steamers arrived across Atlantic and North American ports. President Harrison proclaims a treaty with Brazil under the reciprocity accord. New York Feb 5 Charles R Flint of Flint Co and treasurer of the New York Commercial Company limited, which trades with Brazil, commented on the recently concluded reciprocity treaty between Brazil and the United States. He called the agreement a highly important event opening significant opportunities.
