A Boston petition in the Senate seeks to create a single Building Department led by a mayoral appointee earning no less than 7500 dollars. The new structure would have three deputies handling construction, post erection inspections, and sanitary and elevator work in city and quasi public buildings.
London letters say a summer race is undesirable and a challenge is unlikely. Sir George Newnes notes plans to contest the cup next year. Rumor circulates that Dunraven faces pressure from high level advisers over a full apology, with a tentative version said to be moving from Sandringham to New York.
Washington February 5 forecast for Thursday calls for Maine New Hampshire and Vermont to be generally fair with northeasterly winds. Massachusetts to be cloudy with rain in the afternoon and increasing northeasterly winds. Advancing weather patterns expect cooler air moving southward.
Patchogue L I February 5 The two masted fruit steamer Lamington from Valencia Spain bound for New York ran ashore twelve miles east of Fire Island at eight last night with twenty four aboard including two passengers. Lifesaving crews at Blue Point Bellevue and Lone Hill laid a line and used the breeches buoy to bring ashore twenty men while Captain Duff and three officers remained aboard. Cargo salvage and rigging work continued as the vessel sits high on the beach in seven feet of water and may be floated once unloaded.
The West End seeks 3 cent transfers arguing for cheaper fares while threatening wage cuts if legislation harms the company. President Little to conference committee refuses to discuss hours or wages, prompting union plans for Friday action at City Hall amid heated talks about transfers and city protest.
Two gas asphyxiation deaths reported to Boston police involve Cassie M Grant a 48 year old nurse at 28 Upton Street and a Rockland man identified as Frank Parker. In both cases the gas was on and the deaths are considered self inflicted with rooms checked and bodies moved to the city hospital morgue and undertaker.
The British ship Kilbrannan en route from Callao to Vancouver was driven ashore by a fierce NW gale near Point Wilson. The vessel listed amid heavy seas, lifeboats were lost, crew clung to rigging, and two dozen people including Captain McCullum’s wife were safely landed after being forced high and dry on the beach.
John L. Sullivan and his wife depart Springfield for Fort Worth where he will rejoin his company then proceed to El Paso for the fifth carnival on February 14. Several hundred fans gather at the depot as his bandaged head and scarred face draw attention. he appears in fair condition overall.
George W. Elliott of Devon Street Roxbury proprietor of the Highland Foundry reported to police at midnight that he had been robbed near Union Station about an hour earlier.
Oliver H. P. Belmont, linked by marriage to Alva Vanderbilt, joins politics as a Tammany Society member. He becomes a sworn member as Perry Belmont may join the new Board of Sachems at the March meeting. A Croker committee led by Billy Dalton is named to shape the state.
In Sandy Bay Washington on February 5 the House rivers and harbors committee heard Rep Moody of Massachusetts and Captain Candaze support converting Sandy Bay Massachusetts into a harbor of refuge. They sought a 150000 dollar appropriation for next year and urged completing the project under the contract system.
Fort Monroe Virginia February 5 The battleship Maine, after a stop at Norfolk for supplies, has joined the fleet this afternoon reaffirming readiness and position in the harbor.

In Worcester at the Superior Criminal Court the jury returned a guilty verdict against Benjamin F. Townsend for burning George P. Calhouns barn in Rutland on November 25. Calhoun died trying to save his cattle.
The public bid for a large bond issue drew unprecedented nationwide response. New England bid five percent of the total amount and nearly 600 million dollars in bids were received. Bids ranged from par to 119, and syndicates appear unlikely to obtain much of the issue.
Philadelphia report says Josiah H. Richolderfer aged 78 employed Annie Tate as housekeeper and George Barton as body servant. Barton poisoned the man and the housekeeper, fled after ransacking the home. The housekeeper died. Richolderfer is seriously ill but expected to recover. Barton claimed a Boston father and stepmother.
Lady Jane Frances Wilde widow of Sir William Wilde and mother of William and Oscar Wilde dies in London at an advanced age. Once a Dublin salon leader famed for power as a writer and hostess, she hosted gatherings of notable figures from around the world in Dublin and later Oakley Street London.
From Rome comes word that Princess Marie Louise wife of Prince Alexander of Bulgaria has asked the Pope to annul their marriage. She objects to Prince Alexander’s plan to convert their elder son Boris to the Greek church. The Pontiff refused to grant a divorce citing church discipline.
In Rochester on February 5, the trial of Rev. John M. Fitzgerald ended with a guilty verdict on the charge of arson in the second degree for causing the parochial schoolhouse in Charlotte to burn on July 17.

Rhode Island banks including National Phoenix Bank in Westerly and Rhode Island Hospital and Trust in Providence list bid prices and sums such as 110.50 on 15,000 and 111 on 20,000 and 129 on 20,000. Henry Pearce of Providence bids 25,000 at 110.1. Merchants National Bank and others in Providence report bids from 50,000 to 500,000 at various prices. Slater National Bank Pawtucket and National Exchange Bank Providence note 200,000 and 100,000 respectively.
First National Bank Wallingford reports $20 and Naugatuck National Bank $125 000 at 109. Scottish Union and National Insurance Company Hartford reports $100 000 at 109.
Washington reports a dramatic response to a government loan offer. The Treasury sought 100 million but bids totaled over 600 million capital, overwhelming officials. Fifteen clerks scheduled bids through the day as 1,200 bids remained to be processed and copied tomorrow.
