Sir Edward Meriwether, a British captive, recounts a dramatic pursuit aboard the captured merchantman Ponga fitted with a heavy six inch gun battery at Kiel. He praises German gallantry and courtesy amid the raid.
A large crowd gathers for a political rally this month as a speaker pledges action and predicts Congress will deliver the goods while leading the audience in a rendition of America.
Mrs Woodrow Wilson tipped a waitress and cloak room attendant at the Hotel Chamberlain with a five dollar gold piece and a quarter. Officials said they expect no prosecution for the First Lady and her accomplice. In Kansas City President Wilson called for steps to deter American losses abroad to cheers from a 16 000 crowd.
In Providence on February 2, the defense rested in the Mohr murder case as two witnesses, wife and sister of defendant Henry Spellman, were arrested for perjury. Victor Brown of Roxbury testified for the defense after police arrested the two witnesses. The accused faced intense questioning from Attorney-General Herbert A. Rice as the day ended.
Brown denied shooting Dr Mohr and all charges, but failed to name specific dates or witnesses. He claimed to be joy riding alone on a motorcycle between Providence and Rocky Point and Riverside the night of the tragedy, a weak alibi exposed under cross examination. Mr. Rice pressed to clear himself of charges raised by George W Healis.
Louis Merrion, linked to a Christmas Eve diamond theft from Mappin & Webb on St. Catherine Street Montreal, was arrested in Roxbury after a Boston witness identified him. Detective agency head R. M. Sackett traced Merrion amid links to prior robberies including the Dime Savings Bank of Brooklyn and Bronx Bank cases.
Ed McGrath reports the Boston Braves changed ownership and held a secret election for officers and board of directors. The new slate, announced yesterday, is described as having a complete Boston tone and full representation of the club.
Percy D Haughton was elected president Arthur C Wise treasurer and Walter E Hapgood secretary. The vice president is ex Governor David I Walsh joining a board with ex Lieutenant Governor Louis A Frothingham and A Paul on the directors list.
Washington February 2 Count von Bernstorff the German ambassador said he had received no communication yet from his government regarding the Lusitania and did not expect one before Friday Three days are usually needed for a cable message to reach the ambassador from Berlin Despatches from Berlin today claimed a communication had been sent to Bernstorff yesterday by the foreign office It was said the message would not be formal for presentation to the United States but would contain informal instructions to Bernstorff
Washington February 2 The fight over Louis D Brandeis nomination to the Supreme Court will open tomorrow at 11 before the judiciary sub committee. Opposition to confirmation has grown to formidable proportions with several accusers in Washington ready to present charges affecting Brandeis professional record.

Two Gloucester fishermen John Forrest and Henry Boucher were rescued from a frigid gale off Cape Sable by the steamship Innishowen Head. They, exhausted and nearly speechless, rode out the storm after their trawl lines parted from the Elsie, a Gloucester schooner. They were brought to St John New Brunswick and will sail to Boston with passage paid by the American consul. Forrest, 36, from Charlottetown P E I, and Boucher, 26, Gloucester native, endured freezing conditions and near capsizes before the rescue.
