Deserting Austrian Army Man Arrives After Flight to U S
John Schneider formerly of Steubenville Ohio arrived aboard the Hamburg American liner Rhaetia claiming desertion from the Austrian army after serving three months in Oberjauser. He left Austria a month earlier under cover of night and slept in a horse stall before making a five day trek to Hamburg and then to Boston and finally to the South Station in Cleveland. His fear of arrest upon landing was noted as immigration authorities reportedly had no right to detain him. He planned to reach Steubenville to stay with friends.
