Tax Of $200 For Tourists On World Cruise
The Hamburg-American liner Cleveland arrived from the Orient with 685 passengers who had embarked in New York for a round the world trip. Under the coastwise act each passenger landed here is liable to a 200 fine for traveling between domestic ports in a foreign-flag vessel. The government soon agreed to remit fines if the line protested to Washington, with the amount then reduced to 1000 to fund a test in federal court to determine the law’s applicability.
