Bold American aims new steam ship breakthrough since Great Eastern

The London Court Journal notes an American plan to attempt the boldest departure from ordinary steamship design since the Great Eastern. The Journal of Commerce calls for Sanitary Commission officers to account for their stewardship asking where the money goes and how it is spent. Desolation spreads in Arkansas with ruined towns and barren fields. Marmaduke allegedly rode through houses on horseback during a spree, using homes as stables.

Draft of 500000 Men Ordered for March 10, 1864

Executive Mansion announces a draft of five hundred thousand men to serve for three years or during the war. The draft will take place on March 10 with credits for those already enlisted or drafted before March 1. Signed by the President.

Wall collapses on Bridge Street burying man horse and cart

A side-wall of building No 8 Bridge Street collapsed yesterday afternoon in New York, burying a man a horse and a cart. The man was killed and the building damage is reported at 15000 dollars. A Herald despatch from Headquarters Department of West Virginia dated January 30 notes the incident.

Steamer Hillman Brings Cotton and Volunteers. Patton Burned

The Hillman arrived from Memphis with 200 bales for the East and 100 for St. Louis and 350 re enlisted volunteers of the 12th Michigan along with other soldiers. The Patton was burned at Walker's Bend last Saturday with $25,000 loss. no lives lost. Guerilla activity rises as Quantrell’s band nears Gaines's Landing. Buckland takes command of Memphis district. Reed to Cairo.

Rebel Cavalry Scout Threatens Indianola Texas

A Herald letter from Metagorda Texas dated Jan 17 describes a rebel cavalry force of 500 to 1000 sighted near Indianola on Jan 13. Union troops formed in line and fired as the rebels retreated. Brig. Gen. Benton arrived to command but the enemy had not yet appeared. reports say a possible attack may occur soon.

Petersburg Garrison Safe After Evacuation

The New York Herald describes Col Thoburn’s Petersburg garrison as safe after evacuating position due to anticipated large Confederate attack. The enemy shelled and charged but found no opposition as Thoburn’s retreating force remained nearby. Weather worsened with rain and Gen Milroy gave an encouraging Cumberland speech.
