Uncertain Civil War Outlook and Political Critique
The article warns the nation’s military position is weak with East Tennessee on the defensive and Port Hudson menaced while urging stronger presidential leadership. It critiques Congress for partisan debates over oaths and expulsions, and stresses that professed love for the negro alone cannot save the country.

Rebellion Cause Highlighted by Detroit Paper
The Detroit Free Press argues the rebellion stems from the South’s belief that citizens owe allegiance to state government over the nation. It notes able men were misled by this doctrine aided by history, language, state pride, and the state national political structure.
