The Lowell public building site was settled with Secretary Windom signing papers for the St. Peter's Church location. Death of Mrs. Caroline A. Riddle and loss of district attorney

The death of Mrs. Caroline A. Riddle, wife of Hon. A. G. Riddle, longtime district attorney at Washington, is noted with regret by New Englanders active in abolition and woman suffrage. Riddle, a Republican loyalist linked to Gov. Andrew and Samuel Bowles, was kept by Lincoln era allies, then asked to resign under President Harrison amid party faction clashes. The loss of both wife and office leaves the elder Riddle lonely.

Morgan Likely Confirmed as Indian Affairs Chief

General Morgan is widely expected to be confirmed as commissioner of Indian affairs. Senator Ingalls opposes but takes no action, and unfriendly Senators lack the will to oppose. Endorsements from Indian friends and his proven performance render a fight unlikely. Dr Dorchester faces a separate case but will also likely be confirmed without protest.
