Three Drowned In Arlington Reservoir

Arlington Heights workers and residents witnessed a drowning tragedy at the icy Arlington reservoir as three sisters and a rescuer perished amid thin ice. Firemen and police battled to reach victims while volunteers used boats and grappling irons, recovering all bodies around dusk. Scannell, a discharged Camp Morrison airman, died while trying to save Mollie Goodman and Esther Goodman as the ice broke beneath him. The event prompted mayoral discussion on city salaries and budget tensions amid labor considerations.
