Zanzibar as a great eastern commercial mart and Bertram's Zanzibar model
Mr Stanley's Africa letter portrays Zanzibar as a rising commercial hub on the east coast, where London New York and Salem merchants profit quietly from African goods. It recounts John Bertram of Salem building a Zanzibar agency, the growth from a single whaling voyage to a family of agents, and urges enterprising Americans and Englishmen to pursue similar opportunities on the mainland. The piece notes colonial houses, local hospitality, and the favorable climate for enterprise, ending with a reflective portrait of Zanzibar merchants.
