Emigrant ship Cospatrick burned with few survivors

London reports the burning of the emigrant ship Cospatrick. A telegram from Madeira confirms only three known survivors: the second mate and two seamen, who were rescued by the British ship Sceptre after ten days afloat. They subsisted at times on the flesh and blood of those who died in the boat.

Gerrit Smith death ends remarkable career in New York

New York dec 28 Gerrit Smith dies at 80 after a career as a major landowner in Oneida county and a lawyer who defended a German accused in Madison County. He rose from family fortune to own nearly a million acres and a Oswego water power venture yielding large income. His death follows a paralytic attack after Christmas remarks and prior meeting with Astor. He leaves two children and a widow.

Subcommittee Probes Pacific Mail Finances and Irwin Deposits

The Ways and Means subcommittee opened sessions at the Fifth Avenue Hotel to investigate Pacific Mail Steamship Company affairs. Witnesses including Mr Cole of American Exchange Bank described large deposits by Irwin, routed via King the Postmaster, with multiple checks and certified funds totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars. Bank ledgers and check records from Harriott & Noyes and Park Bank were examined, detailing May 1872 transactions and the involvement of Stockwell and King in stock transfers and deposits.

Massive Southbridge fire destroys Dresser Block and more

In Southbridge Massachusetts two brick blocks and several small wooden buildings on Main Street burned early Sunday. Losses totaled about 50000 with details including D W Williams furniture $10000 stock $7000 insured and Mercy Foskett milliner $4500 loss. Fire attributed to spontaneous combustion.

Swindler Bailey Arrested After New England Scams

A man calling himself O Bailey arrived in Manchester from New York and swindled firms in Manchester Lowell and Montpelier. He contracted for machinery worth 1690 and 2400 with forged drafts and secured loans with fictitious funds. He was arrested in Montpelier and returned to Manchester while denying his true identity. He is about 29 and carried religious tracts, with a written confession of past swindling.

Detectives doubt boy is Charlie Ross found in Syracuse
