Vice Admiral Sir Rosslyn Wemyss named first sea lord succeeding Admiral Sir John Jellicoe who is elevated to the peerage. Announcement states Jellicoe’s services recognized and his future post possible. Wemyss to assume duties at once as Britain honors its senior naval leadership.
President directs seizure of all railroad properties and steamship lines owned by railroads effective tomorrow. He will recommend payment to railroads of average net earnings from the last three years and provide backing for all new railroad securities.
Admiral Jellicoe, veteran of the Atlantic and home fleets and former second sea lord, becomes supreme commander of the home fleet at the war’s outbreak. He, 58, hands the grand fleet role to Vice Admiral Beatty while Vice Admiral Wemyss rises to second sea lord amid public ire over a North Sea convoy raid and calls for a full inquiry.
Thomas Flynn a 48 year old resident of 39 Lynnfield Street Lynn hanged himself after sending his two daughters to a movie yesterday afternoon. He improvised a rope from a cut clothesline by tying it to a kitchen hook and mounting a chair. The rope tightened and caused fatal strangulation when the hook gave way under his weight.
Report describes reduced fighting aside from a few bombardments and raids. In France snow covers the front while the northern Italian front remains largely quiet except for Christmas counter attacks by Italian forces against Austro-German gains at Col del Rosso and Monte de Val Bella near the Brenta River.

London Dec 26 The admiralty reports a material decline in losses to British shipping for the past week. Eleven merchantmen of 1600 tons or more were sunk by mine or submarine as well as one smaller vessel and one fishing boat.
A vote by telephone operator workers shows strong support for a strike as demands push for a federal mediator. They seek a maximum $16 pay and accuse the company of insufficient funding to meet their wage goals.
Telephone operators in metropolitan Boston voted late at night on striking if wage demands are not met by New England Telephone. Early morning counts show a large majority in favor from about 3000 ballots, signaling possible action that could affect workers in four New England States.
President Wilson proclaims government possession and operation of U S railroads for the war to begin at noon Friday. Secretary McAdoo will head the railroad system as director general with all lines under single operation. Congress will be asked to guarantee prewar earnings and repair of railroad properties. For the week ended December 16 17 British merchantmen were sunk including 14 ships over 1600 tons. The prior week saw 21 sunk, 14 over 1600 tons. Last week marked the lowest losses since November 11 when six vessels were sunk, with earlier weeks recording 12 on November 4 and a low 13 for September 30.
The Navy Department weighs taking Deer Island to relieve crowding at Portsmouth and Charlestown prisons. Commandant Rush of the Boston navy yard is asked to locate a suitable site for a prison to house about prisoners. Reserve Officer Murphy of Joy Street Station pursues Tony Morello from 22 Wall Street to a nearby house. Morello climbs to a roof and is cornered behind a chimney with Henrietta McDonald’s handbag recovered containing part of a five dollar stash. The officer believes the vest was discarded.
Nahant selectmen must decide whether jitney operators may continue after the Nahant and Lynn Street Railway threatens to discontinue service due to licenses granted to 10 jitney operators in the town.
A fire at 62 Chambers street caused 5000 in damage to the four story Jewish Institute and forced 15 nurses from the adjacent Nurses Home on McLean street into the street. Fireman Edward Lock was badly cut by falling glass and taken to Relief Hospital. No injuries beyond the cuts and cold.
New Hampshire Supreme Court overruled defense exceptions and denied a new trial for Frederick L. Small sentenced to be hanged for the murder of his wife. Execution could only be delayed by a governor and council reprieve or pardon. Neighbors found evidence of murder after a lake shore cottage fire in 1916 and Mrs Small's body was recovered amid debris.
Theodore Friebus, Boston actor, collapsed and died in the wings before his cue in the second act of A Tailor Made Man at Cohan Harris. He was 45, formerly with Castle Square Theatre and the musical comedy 1915, and had notable roles in Belasco Frohman and Harris productions.

New York December 26 Within two weeks most sugar refineries will be operating. By end of January about 50 000 tons of sugar will be brought in and consumer price should fall to nine cents from ten. About 25 000 tons of raw sugar are being loaded on ships from Porto Rico and Cuba or en route.
