United States ambassador to England Whitelaw Reid praised English schoolchildren in a speech before the State Teachers Association. He argued English schools produce well behaved, orderly youth with Christian morals and obedience to law, suggesting Americans could benefit from such qualities.
Thieves entered the home of Mrs. F. R. Powers at 206 Massachusetts Avenue stealing a leather bag with diamond earrings two rings two bank books and 14 shares of Trinity copper stock among other valuables. The burglars fled leaving money and additional items behind.

Police in Newark report a murder in the Hackensack Meadows Harrison. The nude body of a striking woman about 30 lay nearly submerged in an icy pond. bystanders found the exposed feet and dragged the body ashore in Harrison this afternoon.

McCullough accused Noyes of dishonesty, demanding a retraction, which led to a tense session as Noyes chaired for the first time this year. The panel also passed 35 to 6 a motion renaming North End Park Scigliano Park in honor of the late Representative George Scigliano.
A warrant was sworn for the arrest of Fred G Bonfils, Denver Post proprietor, following an early morning confrontation with former Senator Thomas M Patterson, who was knocked down and injured. The clash stems from a long running quarrel between the Post proprietors and Patterson, a News Times stockholder.
Patrolman Maurice R Barry of Division 8 had his 10 day suspended sentence for conduct unbecoming an officer reduced to allow voluntary retirement. He was found guilty by a trial board after a dereliction complaint from a woman seeking directions near Massachusetts General Hospital. He may retire voluntarily due to age, near 65, and the sentence is suspended.
Charles Lind say, an engineer at the Miller piano factory, was knocked unconscious when a freight elevator fell three stories while he oiled machinery. He was taken home by ambulance. A kerosene lamp exploded in his house during the alarm. Lindsey has a four inch head gash and remains unconscious.
Chicago December 26 Dr Joseph Piesen died tonight from tetanus after a nose fracture from a stairway fall in a packing plant lab He asked doctors to end his suffering and directed his family to hospitalize him He made a will with a lawyer and died of heart failure after a convulsion.
Elizabeth A. Longenbach a clairvoyant dies by setting fire to her clothes in a Boston block room. Her daughter Bertha C. Langenbach, studying medicine in Boston, had received about 3000 dollars from her mother for schooling per vouchers found in the room.
Bradford P. Knight of Richmond who killed Miss Mamie Small in Gardiner on February 11 189% died in the Thomaston state prison last Monday at age 535. He had been in prison since 1901 serving a life sentence. Death was caused by tuberculosis and Knight was buried in Augusta today.
Carlo Albani sang Manrico in Trovatore at the Majestic Theatre while a police officer tailed him ready to arrest. The crowd cheered and kissed the pursuer as the scene sparked uproar, ending only when a citizen-officer was removed after a cash bond.
The arrest stems from alleged breach of contract between Albani and Hammerstein of the Manhattan Opera Company. Hammerstein previously brought Albani from Italy to sing in New York, then sought to bar him from American appearances this season. Albani believed the German contract freed him, prompting a Boston engagement with Henry Russell’s San Carlo company and a December 25 Aida performance. a sheriff later served arrest papers at the Lenox Hotel.
George M Wetherby of Waltham was fined 1000 and given three months in Cambridge Superior Court for killing Warren Batchelder on May 6 on Western Avenue near Cottage Farm bridge. Batchelder, 242 Putnam Avenue, was struck on a cross walk and identified the driver as a red touring car. Patrolman Ralph Rice secured the arrest after Batchelder lapsed into unconsciousness. Wetherby, a Columbus Avenue automobile man, pleaded guilty at trial after initially denying guilt and will finish his sentence at hard labor.
John O Connor nearly drowned at the L street bath in South Boston during an epileptic episode. Joseph Goode a nearby department employee dived in and pulled him to shore before police and ambulance crews took him to City Hospital in critical condition. Goode after the rescue was exhausted but survived the ordeal.
In Haverhill on December 26 Jacob Ridley aged 90 and his wife Martha 75 were rescued from a blazing home by former city marshal now patrolman McLaughlin. They sustained severe burns and may not recover. Ridley, an invalid, was strapped to a chair and unable to escape. Martha attempted to reach the door but was overcome and collapsed.
Councillor Lewis Bartlett of Lynn joined Representative Robert Luce of Somerville in supporting Governor Guild for President at the Bay State Republican convention. Bartlett, a long-time adviser, praised Guild as able and sincere and said he would sweep the country if nominated.
Charles Everett of 14 Farnsworth street Waltham was injured when a Boston Elevated trolley car collided with the wagon he drove on Arsenal street at 7 15 p m The crash occurred in Watertown on December 26.

A man was robbed of $25 by two armed assailants on Ellery street and Broadway Cambridge at 10 50 last night. The victim gave the name J C Namartel but later recanted saying he preferred no publicity. Police say the robbery is real and tied to other recent crimes. Names given describe one mulatto and one white man, medium height, stocky, wearing a tight coat with caps and a derby.
Representative William A. Calderhead of Kansas is critically ill with double pneumonia at his Washington apartment.
