Gas Main Break Sparks Narrow Escape On Portland Street

Forty residents staggered from nearly asphyxiation after a gas main ruptured on Portland street. Lodgers at Nos 2 and 4 and 36 inhaled fumes, with deaths of a St. Bernard, a fox and many rats. Residents alerted others and four doctors were summoned as families endured hours of sickness and trembling.

Perilous voyage ends as bark Ethel reaches port after gale

The bark Ethel loaded with hides from Montevideo and bound for Boston narrowly avoided stranding near Truro. Tug Kate Jones towed her to anchorage under Long Point and she will be towed to her wharf. Captain Dodge abandons Boston Harbor approach after seventy five days at sea amid calms, winds, and northwester gales.

Miraculous Escape as Streetcar Plows Into Frame Building

A Camp Street car bound for downtown Providence ran wild on Olney street hill and crashed into a frame building. Ten passengers plus the motorman and conductor were aboard. two passengers and Conductor Irving F. Mott were injured. Motorman Louis E. Morrow stayed at his post and emerged unscathed as the car was smashed. Mrs. Sarah Malufsky suffered abdominal and head injuries. Mott was taken to Rhode Island Hospital then home. Charles H. Holmes injured his leg and back.

Fires Wreck British Vessel Lamberts Point Off St Johns

The British steamer Lamberts Point arrived at St Johns Newfoundland with its cotton on fire after flames broke out midships. Crew fought the blaze for forty hours in terrible heat flooding compartments and venting steam to reach the cargo. Nearly the entire cargo, including cattle and cotton, was damaged as shipboard efforts continued to discharge cotton and reach the fire source.

Martha's Vineyard Steamer Remains Stranded at Wood's Hole

The steamer Martha's Vineyard remains in place after grounding in the Wood's Hole passage. Wrecking crews have pumped the vessel free and, weather permitting, she may be lifted by tomorrow. The Manhunt has replaced her on the line, with the Taurus en route to assist the recovery.

Tug Carbonero arrived yesterday from Philadelphia with three barges in tow and was in a collision Saturday night with an unknown schooner on Nantucket Shoals. Details continued on page 2.

Double Tragedy Near Jacksonville Ends Couple’s Christmas Day

Neal Milton and his elderly wife were killed by an unknown assailant in their home near Jacksonville Indiana nine miles south of town. Their son Harry found the bodies after a Christmas greeting call. A double barrel shotgun lay beside the husband as officers search for the killer.

Ottawa Dec 26 The Hon Clifton Sifton Minister of the Interior and J A McKenna depart for Washington on invitation of Secretary of War Alger to discuss relief for Yukon district miners. Sifton expects to stay about a week.

Firemen Hurt As Building Collapses in Rochester

A fire at the Coburn building on North Water street caused several injuries to firemen. While controlling the blaze the second floor collapsed into the basement trapping six men, including Fireman William Burke who was badly hurt.

James W Allen Dies in Worcester at 37

James W. Allen of Winslow and Allen died in Worcester from pneumonia after a week of illness. He served as United States consul at Zanzibar from 1892 to 189% and was 37 years old and unmarried.

Man's Ankle Broken In Roxbury Fall

Morris Christian 68 of 422 West Broadway South Boston broke his right ankle after a fall in a vacant lot off Calumet street Roxbury yesterday. He was taken to City Hospital for treatment.
