Treasury Report Advocates Higher Duties and System Changes
The treasury secretary’s report endorses protectionist measures and proposes raising duties and reinstating specific duties over ad valorem. It also outlines several adjustments to the sub-treasury system with emphasis on revenue from customs, which reached 28.3 million dollars for the last year, while lands yielded 1.69 million. The 1850 customs receipts are projected near 32 million dollars, possibly reflecting higher duties.
