Gate to be placed at James Russell Lowell Memorial Park

A handsome gate will guard the entrance to the former Lowell estate land in Cambridge now the James Russell Lowell Memorial Park near Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Boston architect James T. Kelly designed it as the park’s entrance feature. The 1899 purchase by subscription secured 140,000 square feet for a park linked to the Charles River Reservation, with Metropolitan Park Commission funding one third of the cost and the rest raised by locals. The land was conveyed to Massachusetts to be held by the Metropolitan Park Commission in trust for park use and memorial purpose, allowing a Lowell monument and keeping the property open and unbuilt upon.
