The Highland Land Court Rents Down in Crofter Dispute
London Dec 25 The Highland Land Court reduced crofter rents after examining farms, bailiffs, and owners across the region. The average rent cut runs about 38.5 percent with arrears falling 65 percent and some abatements reaching 90 percent. Sir Kenneth Matheson’s Rosshire estates led with a further 16 percent cut after a prior voluntary reduction, while landlords lament smaller patronage but acknowledge relief for crofters. The landlords threaten to seek Parliament’s reversal, though Commons and Tories show little support for abolishing the court.
