Meriden polo players beat New Havens 8 to 2 this afternoon in Meriden Conn. A spectator suffered a badly injured eye when a ball struck it. Y Valliant broke a collar bone and Dunning sustained a forehead cut during the match.

A major Marblehead fire devastates the business district, destroying every shoe factory except Harris's and leaving about 1500 people unemployed. Loss estimated near half a million with insured amounts listed. many homes and public buildings damaged or ruined.
A December fire consumed eight to nine acres in the town's business district, wiping out Ballard Bros and many shoe manufacturers plus a large house furnishing goods store. Buildings on Pleasant to Essex and School, Spring to Sewall streets, and Nicholson's Hill were burned, including the Red Men's Hall and various offices. The blaze, more destructive than the 1877 fire, left numerous shops and saloons obliterated.
Early this morning a fire at 2.30 in a brick building 38 Clinton street occupied by Samuel Walker as an oil store gutted the structure. The total loss, including buildings owned by Walker, is estimated at least 10,000 dollars with insurance coverage.
A major blaze in Cincinnati on December 25 burned three acres of ground, destroying the Charles C. Jacobs Cordage ropewalk, railroad cars and multiple factories including Central Furniture Association and Queen City Twine Company. Losses exceed 300000 with several homes scorched and three firefighters injured.
Fire in the Bowery tenements at 79 and 81 early this morning trapped Charles Stackler aged 26 who was fatally burned. Police and firemen rescued several other tenants amid the blaze. A separate item notes a large barn owned by John H. Knowlton nearby with ten tons of hay and farm equipment.
New Orleans reports the steam boat John H Hanna burned last night near Plaquemine with 100 aboard and 2500 bales of cotton on board. Only about a dozen survivors. In Bevier Missouri on Wednesday new trouble erupted as African Americans acted aggressively and fired firearms to intimidate. Militia responded swiftly and five ring leaders were confined in the guardhouse by nightfall.
