A severe storm crippled New England traffic with electric cars and trains heavily delayed and horse drawn vehicles hindered. Coastwise shipping was nearly paralyzed. Trains arrived up to three hours late. Captain Colberth of the steamer H. M. Whitney reported rough seas on the New York voyage.
The steamer Turrialba, with over 60 passengers aboard, lay aground on the Jersey sands south of Barnegat as heavy seas pounded her. The revenue cutter Seneca arrived after a fast run from New York to aid, with Boston residents N J Littlefield C P Blum T A P Perkins and W G Parkin aboard among those listed.
In a Boston Christmas Eve spectacle 10000 people braved a driving snowstorm on the Common to sing Adeste Fideles at 10 pm. A 40 foot tree on Tremont street mall, lit at 6 o'clock, drew thousands of shoppers as the city marked its first official celebration with man and nature sharing the moment.
Justice John Duff of the Municipal Court was thrown from his automobile when struck by an express at Farm Street station Dover while hurrying home with Christmas gifts.
