Indictment Over Railroads in Sherman Case In New York

Charles S. Mellen Ed son J Chamberlin and Alfred W Smithers were indicted by a federal grand jury under the Sherman anti trust law for conspiring to restrain trade through memoranda of agreement between the New Haven and Grand Trunk railroads. The documents allegedly plan the Grand Trunk to abandon its Providence extension and a Providence to New York steamship line.

School Board Grants Christmas Gifts to Janitors and Teachers

The School Board announced a total $28,568.26 increase for janitors as the division for a $145,000 teacher salary rise takes effect January 1. Boston to Light Christmas Tree with 2000 Lights Tonight

Boston officials mark the first formal Yuletide celebration with the city Christmas tree on Boston Common to be lighted. Candles will glow in windows as carols echo through Tremont Mall led by a Yuletide band and singers from Back Bay. Mayor Fitzgerald oversaw the 2000 lights and D Henry Sullivan supervised the public grounds.

A frightened fire horse bolted from a fire call in Malden yesterday noon, its head in a feed bag. It dragged a roofer’s wagon for a quarter mile through the business section, endangering Christmas shoppers and passersby.

Two Held Up Office Robbery In Buffalo

In Buffalo on December 23 a lone robber entered the Grand Trunk railway ticket office at Ellicott Square and, brandishing a revolver, forced two clerks Joseph Edwards and Harold Mowry to open the cash drawer. He took $327 and fled, the act visible to crowds from Main Street and the court of the large building.

Ton and Half Safe Kills Man in West End

John Farrell a 21 year old single resident of Somerville died after a ton and a half safe weighing about 38000 pounds fell on him at 3 Bowker street West End yesterday afternoon. He died at Relief Hospital Haymarket Square around 11 pm. Farrell and fellow workers were loading the safe onto a wagon when a skid failed causing the accident. Crowds gathered as workers freed Farrell from beneath the heavy load.

In East Cambridge Probate Court the executor Samuel D. Elmore asks for a commission to examine and report on estate claims totaling 58,265.60 against the Clarence F. Glover estate. The estate inventories at 88,704.64, with Mrs. Lillian M. Glover asserting 19,800 in property and her brother William Leblanc seeking 6,900 on a note.
