The piece recalls Puritan distrust of Christmas, Catholic influence, old observances and advertisements, and early theatres and amusements. It notes public meals by the Salvation Army, church services, and modern entertainments at Symphony Hall, with reflections on Pilgrim-era secular restraint and now widespread celebration.
