In Untostown Pa on December 24 Capt. A C Nutt cashier of the state treasury was shot and killed in Jenning's hotel by N L Dukes a Fayette county bar member and state legislature member-elect. Nutt had just returned from Harrisburg with his nephew Breckenridge to meet Dukes after receiving infamous letters. The two fought in Dukes room. Dukes fired while Breckenridge and Feathers separated them. Nutt died instantly. Dukes was arrested. Motive remains a mystery.

A Brookings Dakota dispatch reports Mrs Barker of Estelline left three children ages 5 3 and 1 ½ months unsupervised while she worked in the barn. The children reportedly set fire to their clothes with coals. two were charred and the baby died after being rescued, while the mother burned attempting to save the infant and is in danger.

Tergiars, Saturday night, attempted to break into a Nashua safe but tools were inadequately. The body of Lewis Hoffman, 45, was found at the Amoskeugg mills canal in Manchester after water was drawn. A New York despatch reports Dr. F. B. Ayer of Nashua died by suicide at an inebriate home in Bay Ridge, standing before a looking glass, and was a confirmed opium eater. A former Antrim resident, missing 31 years, returned from California and is now a merchant and selectman’s son. He left during the golf boom, later connected with Sacramento, Chicago, and Boston, and is over 70. The wife survives.
