Wilson declares banking law as the first step toward prosperity and signs the measure with four gold pens in the presence of drafters, placing free credits at the disposal of merchants for the first time.
President Wilson signed the Glass Owen currency bill at 6 01 o clock, enacting the federal reserve act to reorganize banking and provide elastic credits for merchants and manufacturers. Congress recessed for two weeks as Democrats celebrate passage of tariff and currency reform in nine months.
Herbert Whitaker a Quincy youth confessed to police that he and an accomplice started eight fires along Wollaston boulevard in the last 48 hours causing upwards of 25000 dollars in damage to summer houses. The blazes came as Quincy and Metropolitan police patrols and armed guards kept watch over the terrorized Beach Street sections.
Auburn reports a 6-year-old, Edmund Harris, witnessed 8-year-old Ernest White drown earlier today but did not speak until awakened by grieving parents. Authorities seek any information on White’s whereabouts and the incident remains under investigation.
A boy recounts how Ernest Harris fell through a pond hole while skating and died. The other boy Edmund White, shaken by the event, described the tragedy after being sought by his grieving father and neighbors. Edmund slept that night unaware until he stated the death.
Whitaker, linked to eight incendiary fires in 48 hours, was spotted near Beach street and the boulevard. A metropolitan officer pursued him as he fled, cornering him in the Wood estate rear yard where officers overpowered him after he jumped a garage window. The accomplice, older and believed to be from Neponset, is in custody or to be arrested soon.
Dr R M Anderson chief anthropologist with Stefansson expedition reports all scientists and crew aboard the Alaska and Mary Sachs are safe and well in winter quarters at Collinson Point 50 miles from Flaxman Island in the Arctic Circle.
Mail from Collinson Point Alaska reports two vessels, the Mary Sachs and Karluk, show no serious damage. Mary Sachs was in ice packs last September but repairable. Karluk seen in an ice pack near Point Barrow August 19 by Dr. Anderson. Dispatch from Collinson Point October 13 via Circle City Alaska and south by steamer. Mary Sachs with geologist Kenneth Chapman reached Collinson Point September 27 and wintered there.
Miss Adelaide Brance, once linked with Melvin H. Couch in his sudden death, was released after authorities found no connection to the death. Destitute and ill, she asked to remain a voluntary prisoner a few days, hoping to recover. She said she wished to die and be buried beside Couch, and noted a quarrel with him prior to his collapse in his office.
London December 24 The first poem by Robert Bridges since his appointment was sent to King George and printed in the Times by royal request. The piece follows the historic form of the early English versifier with alliteration and a central pause, linking Bridges to the medieval laureates.
